Test numbers

Here’s a nice list of Australian phone system test numbers, with perhaps the most useful being 12711 (check long distance carrier preselection) and 1800 801 920 (check own number).

So, like you could divert incoming calls to your phone to one of these as a bit of a lark?

Ah yes, I had forgotten the good old 199. As scouts we’d quite often go hiking (for the hike itself or to head somewhere to do something) and it always tickled me pink to jump into any phone box we passed, grab the handset, spin that old rotary dialler of those old green metalic phones, dial in 199, hang up, and run for it… some 5 or so seconds later it’d start ringing. “How delightfully primitive” as was said in Star Trek: The Next Generation “A Matter Of Time” ;)
