Tegan Networks and got tegan.net and tegan.net.au. Why Tegan? I used to run a BBS called Tardis. I thought the BBC might get a bit upset if I called my business Tardis so I picked Tegan, being an Australian character on the Dr. Who TV series.

The priority is getting your dot com!

Beyond that, it's a bit like naming kids. Don't make it so common that lots already use it; make it something easy to spell.

"Kawaaaaaaaaaii! Corp" in Japan. No, not kidding. ("Kawaii" is "cute" in Japanese.)

Getting increasingly p'ed off that I can't use my own frickin' initials as a business name or a website because *all* variations I might want are too similar to existing companies. I have Keltic Knights though (named after a horse) and Getifa (based on a Billy Connolly skit on swearing - which I get all sorts of kewlness points with the geek clubs for).

I'm trying to think of a company name at the moment, so this discussion is very relevant. I have absolutely no idea where to even start. I think I want a generic noun that doesn't really indicate any purpose. But they're all either a) too obscure or b) taken.

On a related note, I love the names given to the "Minds" (AI) in Iain M. Banks Culture novels. For example Frank Exchange Of Views and Shoot Them Later (both warships).

That's right, my own company is Custard Communications, after the name of my old web site. If I had to do it again, I might use a more sensible name, but that's the way it goes.

Occasional Geekrant contributor Tony's web design company is Between Coffees, one can assume after his favourite beverage.

One memorable one is a real estate agent in London called Hotblack Desiato.
