Hmm, I didn't have this issue and I've only just reinstalled XP (what a nightmare with all those fixes and SP2, and SP3 soon... Nearly as annoying as having to upgrade to Kubuntu 8.10 from 7.04, via 7.10, but anyway). It might be due to the fact that I always enable "Show hidden files" and uncheck "Hide file extensions for unknown file types" on a fresh install, and apply it to all folders. Whatever it is, the registry key for it is said to false, and it found the test file that I made on the desktop without problems (random.random), when I clicked the humorous "advanced options".

Incidentally, how can I stop Windows from panicking every time I want to change a bloody file extension?

Re: Method 2 in the KB article above, it works without having to turn on the Indexing service. (Thanks Kevin)

Charles Jones emailed to say a solution is given here: http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBM/tip6200/rh6222.htm

(In summary, in the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/ContentIndex change FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions 1, then reboot.)

Thanks Charles!

In this particular case I was looking for instant gratification on a PC which was not my own! Thus I ended up with DOS. But yeah, it would seem a third-party tool may be the way to go.

Of course you could always try Copernic Desktop Search - it's a wonderful product, and free. Please excuse the lack of a URL but I'm on 33.3 dial up line, Win 95 machine and the agony of looking up a site is just too much.
